About

UPSC CSE

Candidates must be Indian citizens (or fulfill nationality requirements for certain services). They must have a graduate degree from a recognized university. Age limits are generally between 21 and 32 years for the General category, with relaxation for SC/ST (up to 5 years) and OBC (up to 3 years). The number of attempts allowed varies by category: General (6), OBC (9), and unlimited for SC/ST candidates.

The UPSC CSE is conducted in three stages:

  • Preliminary Exam: A screening test with two papers—General Studies (GS) and CSAT (Civil Services Aptitude Test). Only GS marks count for qualification.
  • Mains Exam: Consists of nine papers, including four General Studies papers, two optional papers, one essay paper, and two language papers (qualifying).
  • Interview: A personality test to assess a candidate’s suitability for a career in civil services.

The Preliminary exam includes:

  • Paper I: General Studies (GS), covering history, geography, Indian polity, economy, environmental ecology, general science, and current affairs.
  • Paper II: CSAT, assessing comprehension, logical reasoning, analytical ability, decision-making, and English language skills. CSAT is qualifying (33% minimum required).

The Mains exam consists of:

  • General Studies (GS) Papers I-IV: Covering Indian heritage, history, geography, governance, social justice, international relations, technology, environment, ethics, and integrity.
  • Essay Paper: Requires writing essays on given topics.
  • Optional Subject Papers I & II: Candidates select an optional subject with two papers on advanced knowledge of the subject.
  • Language Papers: Compulsory English and an Indian language paper (qualifying only).

The optional subject contributes to 500 marks, which can significantly impact ranking. Selection should be based on interest, previous academic background, availability of resources, and scoring trends. Some popular options include Public Administration, Geography, History, and Sociology.

Current affairs play a crucial role in both Prelims and Mains. It is essential to stay updated on national and international events, government policies, economic developments, and social issues. Sources include newspapers (like The Hindu), government reports, and monthly current affairs magazines.

Standard resources include:

  • NCERT Books (Class VI-XII) for basics.
  • Laxmikanth’s Indian Polity, Spectrum’s Modern History, Ramesh Singh’s Indian Economy, GC Leong’s Physical Geography, among others.
  • Daily newspapers, monthly current affairs magazines, online platforms, and coaching materials.

Create a detailed study plan with clear daily, weekly, and monthly goals. Dedicate time for regular revision and practice mock tests to improve accuracy and speed. Prioritize understanding over memorization, and focus on high-yield topics.

The interview assesses personality, communication skills, analytical ability, problem-solving skills, presence of mind, and overall suitability for the civil services. Candidates should be well-prepared on their educational background, optional subject, current events, and personal opinions on social issues.
